Hurlingham Week

3-12 August 2003
One of the rare players whose skills are appreciated beyond the immediate circle of croquet aficionados is Kournikova - as she is known to her fans, who managed to retain the Silver Jubilee Cup (unrestrictricted handicap) playing with an even lower handicap than last year. At 3½ in 2002, 3 this time and competing against handicaps of up to 20, her achievements must be held in the highest regard. One wonders whether, were she to win it once more next season, Miss Higgins would - as with a football Word Cup treble - be allowed to keep the trophy for good. Without wishing to influence the Hurlingham Club Cups Committee in any way, this seems the only honourable thing to do.

Hurlingham Week '03 was blessed with ferociously hot weather. On the final day temperatures of 38.3C (103F) topped the highest ever recorded in England since records began in the 17th century. Dr Plummer probably wasn't Hurlingham ROT (Referee of Tournament) quite back then, but he must be applauded this week in his bid to win the Mixed Doubles Handicap with his masterful negotiation of high handicapper - though doubtless soon to tumble - Teresa Swales. Surely one of the most youthful looking and stylishly dressed competitors in the tournament, the dapper Doc left local girls drooling over their Zima frames.
