Courting an opening
FORMER world champion croquet player John Solomon gave MP
Jonathan Shaw a few pointers at running the hoops after a
ceremony to open a £57,000 croquet court and sports pavilion.
The MP for Chatham and Aylesford came to Cobdown Sports and
Social Club in Station Road, Ditton, on Saturday to unveil a
plaque at the pavilion, which will mainly be used by bowls and
croquet teams.
The ceremony marked the culmination of more than three
years of fund-raising. A lottery grant provided £36,000,
Tonbridge and Malling council gave £11,000, with the balance
coming from Medway Croquet Club and the bowls clubs of
Aylesford Paper Mill, Medway Sacks and Kimberley Clark.
Croquet club chairman and project manager Peter Highton
said: "We had really nice weather and it all went very well.
It's a beautiful complex and there was a crowd of people there
to enjoy it.
